Shallow groundwater is common in the Central Valley of California and is vulnerable to impact by petroleum products, hazardous substances and polluting chemicals and pesticides.

Contaminants may be released into the environment in numerous ways. Understanding the nature and fate of contaminants, their migration pathways, and the chemistry and geology of the site is important to developing cost effective cleanup methods.
